With electric vehicles becoming increasingly popular across the UK, the government has introduced a new incentive aimed at making the switch more affordable.
The Electric Car Grant (ECG) offers discounts of up to £3,750 on eligible new electric vehicles, helping to reduce one of the biggest barriers for many drivers: the upfront cost of buying an EV. For anyone considering a new electric car, understanding how the scheme works could result in a significant saving.
Who qualifies for the electric car grant?
The Electric Car Grant is available on eligible new electric vehicles with a list price of £37,000 or less. However, not every electric car will automatically qualify.
Manufacturers must apply to join the scheme and meet the government’s sustainability requirements before their vehicles can be approved. This means that whether you can benefit from the grant will depend not only on the vehicle you choose, but also on whether the manufacturer has successfully registered that model under the scheme.
The scheme launched in July 2025 and is expected to run until the end of the 2028/29 financial year, giving buyers several years to take advantage of the support available.
Checking before you buy
Unlike a loan or finance incentive, the Electric Car Grant does not need to be repaid. If your chosen vehicle qualifies, the discount is applied directly to the purchase price, reducing the amount you pay from day one.
For example, a qualifying electric vehicle priced at £30,000 could receive the full £3,750 discount, reducing the purchase price to £26,250. This can make a substantial difference for buyers who are considering whether now is the right time to switch to electric.
Before placing an order, it’s worth speaking to the dealership or manufacturer to confirm whether the specific model you are interested in is included in the scheme. As manufacturers continue to apply for approval, the list of eligible vehicles is expected to grow over time.
With lower running costs, fewer maintenance requirements and government support helping to reduce upfront costs, electric vehicles are becoming an increasingly attractive option for UK drivers.
